First International Symposium on the Olive Sector in the Mediterranean Basin
The Algerian National Institute of Agricultural Research (INRAA), in collaboration with SARL Oliconsai and the National Chamber of Agriculture, organized the First International Symposium on the Olive Sector in the Mediterranean Basin, held on April 15 and 16, 2025, at the INRAA headquarters in Algiers.
Held under the theme “The Olive Sector in the Mediterranean Between Tradition and Modernity: Quality, Health, and Innovation”, this high-level scientific event aimed to promote the exchange of knowledge, experiences, and best practices among stakeholders in the olive sector. The symposium focused on innovations in technology, science, and management to enhance production quality and boost the competitiveness of this strategic sector.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Director of Training, Research and Innovation at the Ministry of Agriculture, the Director General of INRAA, the President of the Agricultural Chamber of Algiers, and the Director of the National Higher School of Agriculture.
The first day featured broad participation from national and international experts, researchers, producers, and professionals from Algeria, Tunisia, Croatia, and Greece. Alongside the plenary sessions, exhibition booths showcased olive oil products and innovations, highlighting excellence and creativity within the sector.
On the second day, discussions continued through a series of presentations and thematic workshops covering key topics such as olive by-product valorization, disease management and integrated control, blockchain technology for food traceability, and agricultural management models for olive orchards.
The symposium concluded with a comprehensive summary of the recommendations drawn from the workshops, emphasizing the importance of strengthening scientific and technical cooperation among Mediterranean countries, supporting innovation across the olive sector’s value chain, and intensifying efforts to valorize by-products.
A symbolic closing ceremony was held to present certificates of participation and awards to speakers, contributors, and sponsors, in a spirit of recognition and appreciation for the efforts that contributed to the success of this remarkable scientific event.
